The next thing I knew I was back at Eros’ palace, laying in bed as if none of it had happened at all. The room was dark, but the drapes were open and the light of the full moon poured in through the window.

I rubbed my eyes, thoroughly disoriented.

Had I not been dressed in the same tattered chiton that I had left the underworld in, I could have mistaken the trials for a painfully vivid nightmare.

I sat up, got out of bed, and stripped off the dirty, torn clothing and found a warm bath waiting for me. Lit candles lined the room and rose petals floated in the steaming water.

I dipped a toe in the water, surprised to find it the perfect temperature. I lowered myself in, moaning at the soft, warmth of the bath water against my skin. I relaxed in the bath, taking my time and savoring every moment.

I straightened and raised my arms up as high as I could, feeling my back and shoulders stretch. I watched the water ripple to the edges of the bath as I sunk slowly back into it. Once it had settled, steam danced across the still surface. I leaned back, closed my eyes, and listened to the sounds of the candles flickering in the quiet night.

When the water began to cool, I stepped out of the bath and dried myself with a soft wool towel. I combed out my hair and rubbed perfumed oil into my skin.

The night was pleasantly warm so I lay naked on the chaise and played the lyre, humming along as I played my favorite song. A breeze came in through the window, drying my damp hair.

I should have wondered how I got back to the palace, but after all that I had been through and how helpless I felt in the face of the divine, I decided to put it out of my mind and relax while I could.

The feeling of the taut strings of my lyre put me at ease. If I closed my eyes, I was anywhere I wanted to be. At home, playing for my mother and sisters. In the meadow outside the Temple of Athena. Playing in the dark for my husband.

I sighed, remembering the feeling of his hands on me. His soft warm skin pressed against mine.

I remembered the weight of his body pinning mine to the bed as his tongue explored my mouth, my neck, my chest, his growing length pressing against my belly as a tingling ache sparked between my thighs.

My eyes still closed, I shifted on the chaise, a wet warmth growing. I ran my hands over the smooth wood of the lyre, thinking about Eros inside me.

“What a sight for sore eyes.”

I screamed, reaching for a blanket to cover my nakedness. “Who’s there?”

I turned and saw him. Him.

My lips parted in awe.

“Eros,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

He stood in the doorway, leaning against the doorframe. It was the first time I had truly seen him.
